SUMMARY:Grounded In Science: 2023 MGAA Fall Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca McMackin\, M.Sc. Adventures in Ecological Horticulture. \n Who doesn’t love butterflies? Our gardens can be stunningly beautiful while also providing habitat for the wildlife that enriches our lives. Indeed garden design and thoughtful management must consider the many other organisms that also use our land. However\,\ntraditional landscaping practices rarely take biodiversity into consideration. Cultivating habitat is central to landscape management. Join us to learn how to use ecological insight and\nexperimentation to develop new management strategies and\, why careful observation and documentation of the insects\, birds and other wildlife in your garden is crucial to their success \nRebecca McMackin is an ecologically obsessed horticulturist and garden designer. She spends her days developing strategies to help people create and care for beautiful gardens that also provide habitat for birds\, butterflies and soil microorganisms. She believes passionately in the value of ecological horticulture as a vehicle for environmental justice. Rebecca spent a decade as the Director of Horticulture of Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) where she and her team used organic principles to manage 85 acres of diverse parkland. During her time overseeing the park ecology stick bugs\, rare mantids\, threatened bees ad extirpated lady bugs all returned to the park. The research conducted at the BBP \, in\, cultivating urban biodiversity and ethical management strategies has influenced thousands of people and entire urban parks systems to adopt similar approaches. \nIn her imaginary spare time Rebecca writes\, designs public gardens\, lectures and teaches on ecological landscape management and pollination ecology. She recently installed an 8000 sq foot native wildflower garden for the entrance to the Brooklyn Museum. Rebecca has just completed a Loeb Fellowship at the Harvard Graduate School of Design\, studying ecological design and science communication. She loves to tell stories and has been published by and featured in the New York Times and the Landscape Institute as well as appearing on National Public Radio and PBS. In October of this year she did a TED talk.\nRebecca holds Masters degrees from Columbia University and the University of Victoria in landscape design and biology. \nTehreem Chughtai\, Calgary AB.    \nEvery garden has its own unique environment. Using the concepts of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a useful tool for examining a garden’s ecosystem by looking at the “bigger picture” of the garden landscape and how to work with nature to manage it appropriately.  \nGarden friends and foes\, natural pest management solutions and companion planting strategies will all be topics of discussion. \nTehreem Chughtai is a University of Calgary educated biological scientist whose research interests are entomology (the study of insects)\, ecology and public health. She works with the Calgary Horticultural Society as an instructor for the Master Gardening program and as a consultant. Tehreem was recognized as one of the Alberta Council of Status & Women’s ‘Women in STEM’ award recipients for her researches’ contributions to equality in the field of science. Tehreem is passionate about making scientific knowledge accessible and has shared her research findings on Global News\, YouTube web series and published articles with the University of Calgary. \n  \nKerry Ross\, BASc\, BArch\,  Green Roof Professional   Green roofs are a renewed building technique initiated in central Europe and catching on in Alberta. The local green roof market is seeing greater uptake in commercial\, institutional and also residential construction\, bringing the multi-beneficial nature-based strategy to the roof. \nCome learn the basics including defining the various types of green roofs\, their design considerations and how they can help solve some of the most pressing ecological and developmental issues facing our communities. Kerry will share cold-climate case studies from nearby and abroad and highlight the new opportunities for gardeners\, and discuss suitable plants for rooftops in Alberta. \nKerry Ross began working on one of the first buildings in Alberta to integrate contemporary green roof systems into the building’s design. Bison Courtyard\, the project situated in the town of Banff\, spurred her passion to learn more about green roof technology as an innovative method to lessen the impacts that buildings have on the natural environment. This experience\, along with study and field research led her to become one of the first Green Roof Professionals in Canada. In 2010\, she launched Green T Design\, a company dedicated to green roof design\, installations and maintenance. Kerry continues to champion the integration of green roofs where possible. \n  \nTickets at: Eventbrite   https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/mgaa-fall-symposium-grounded-in-science-tickets-737555718007?aff=ebdsoporgprofile\n\nGeneral Public $50.\, MGAA Members $40.\, MGAA Students $30. \n

SUMMARY:'NATIVE GARDENS FOR NATURE'S SAKE' - MGOI North Region MG Technical Day
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nDoug Tallamy\, Heather Holm & Joseph Pitawanakwat present topics on Protection and Conservation of Native Plants for our Ecosystem.\n\nVirtual Doors open at 8:30am\nDoug Tallamy 9:00am – 10:30am\n“Nature’s Best Hope”\nHeather Holm 11:00am – 12:30pm\n“Creating and Managing Landscapes for Native Bees”\nJoseph Pitawanakwat 1:00pm – 2:30pm\n“Understanding Awaadiziwin (knowledge/culture) and its role in achieving Bimaadiziwin (life)”\nTech Day closes at 3:00pm\nDoug Tallamy\n“Nature’s Best Hope”\nRecent headlines about global insect declines and three billion fewer breeding birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. To create landscapes that enhance local ecosystems rather than degrade them\, we must add the plant communities that sustain food webs\, sequester carbon\, maintain diverse native bee communities\, and manage our watersheds. Native plants do all of these things better than plants from other continents. If we do this on our private properties\, we can create Homegrown National Park\, a network of viable habitats that will provide vital corridors connecting the natural areas that remain. This approach to conservation empowers everyone to play a significant role in the future of the natural world and thus our own future. \nDoug’s Bio \nDoug Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware\, where he has authored 106 research publications and has taught insect related courses for 41 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book Bringing Nature Home was published by Timber Press in 2007\, The Living Landscape\, co-authored with Rick Darke\, was published in 2014; Nature’s Best Hope\, a New York Times Best Seller\, was released in February 2020\, and his latest book The Nature of Oaks was released by Timber press in March 2021. His awards include recognition from The Garden Writer’s Association\, Audubon\, The Garden Club of America and The American Horticultural Association. \nHeather Holm\n“Creating and Managing Landscapes for Native Bees”\nWhen creating and managing thriving habitats for native bees\, many factors such as seasonal phenology\, nesting strategies\, and flower preferences must be considered-and with approximately 3\,600 species in North America (north of Mexico)\, there are many unique aspects to keep in mind when managing successful landscapes for bees in our Northern ecosystem. \nJoin pollinator conservationist and author Heather Holm as she explores the nesting habitats\, life cycles\, pollen collection\, brood rearing\, and general characteristics of some of the most common native bees in eastern North America\, while highlighting the pollination of native plants and the mutualism between native plants and native bees. Learn about pollen specialists\, the presentation of floral resources\, and how the physical characteristics of bees can influence their effectiveness as pollinators. Heather will also discuss ways to manage landscapes to enhance bee diversity\, plant selection considerations\, and ultimately how to think like a bee! \nHeather’s Bio \nHeather Holm is a biologist\, pollinator conservationist\, and award-winning author. In addition to assisting with native bee research projects\, she informs and educates audiences nationwide\, through her writing and many presentations\, about the fascinating world of native pollinators and beneficial insects\, and the native plant communities that support them. Her first book\, Pollinators of Native Plants\, was published in 2014\, and her second book\, Bees\, published in 2017\, has won six book awards including the 2018 American Horticultural Society Book Award. Her latest book\, Wasps\, was published in February 2021. Heather’s expertise includes the interactions between native pollinators and native plants\, and the natural history and biology of native bees and predatory wasps occurring in the Upper Midwest and Northeast. Currently\, she is working on three projects with volunteers\, restoring approximately ten acres of city-owned park land in her neighborhood for pollinators and people. \n\nJoe Pitawanakwat\n“Understanding Awaadiziwin (knowledge/culture) and its role in achieving Bimaadiziwin (life)”\nStory-telling plant medicine knowledge and its role in the management of the Chronic Disease Epidemic and associated morbidities. We discuss disease pathology and why culture is the only appropriate intervention. We will acknowledge various cultural components as unique humans gifts necessary for life and healing. \nWe will focus\, of course\, on the (provided) plant medicines and understanding its mechanism. With us all at a solid understanding of this knowledge (awaadiziwin) and how it is required to achieve life itself (bimaadiziwin) the conversation then\, necessarily focuses on the unique human ability to engage in reciprocal relationships with medicines themselves\, and our roles and responsibilities to Aki\, the land. \nJoe’s Bio \nJoseph Pitawanakwat is an educator who specializes in plant based medicine. He is the founder and director of Creators Garden. He is from Wiikwemkoong unceded territory. Joseph will share traditional Anishinaabe plant knowledge\, that his grandmother taught him. He has continued to increase his knowledge in an attempt to preserve the language specific to plant names and how they were used for generations. We need to learn the names of native plants\, why they have that name\, what gifts they have\, how we can help them and why we need to spend time with native plants.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Edible Gardening in Alberta\, A Growing Movement
DESCRIPTION:The Edmonton Horticultural Society Speaker Series present this Zoom Event. \nGrowing edibles sustainably regardless of whether you are growing in a large farm\, home garden\, community garden plot or a few containers on the patio or balcony have many common requirements of the grower. It’s not about just growing to feed yourselves now; but it is about gardening in ways that makes it sustainable over the years for humans and the entire planet.Understanding the growing requirements of plants\, especially on the Prairies\, along with the intricate and fascinating synergy between soil\, soil life\, plants\, insects and even those organisms we call ‘pests’ is the basis for success. Planting what thrives where you grow comes next. Then developing knowledge and skills such as: building soil; water conservation; saving open-source seeds; attracting wildlife through providing habitat; pest management plus harvest and preserving the bounty.Fostering the knowledge\, skills and passion for growing our food locally and sustainability is a community effort embraced by individual gardeners\, community gardeners\, SPIN Farmers\, Community Shared Agriculture and other organizations. The benefits to our health and wellness are astonishing\, what we grow just plain tastes great. \nJanet Melrose is ‘Calgary’s Cottage Gardener’\, specializing in Garden Education\, Horticultural Therapy and advocating for a Sustainable Local Food System: successfully synthesising Community-Based Horticultural Therapy programs located in Community Gardens and other organizations; and working with gardeners of all stripes to develop their skills and experience of gardening for enjoyment\, health and sustenance. Janet is passionate about sharing her knowledge and contributing to the community through workshops and various media outlets\, including being a regular contributor to the ‘The Gardener’ and ‘Calgary Gardening’ and now co-author with Sheryl Normandeau for the ‘Prairie Gardener’s Go-To’ series of books. \n  \nRegister for this Zoom event using this link.
