DESCRIPTION:“Many plant species have evolved ways to help their seed germinate at the better times and places in their natural environments\, and can seem quite reluctant to behave for us. We will look at the different treatment methods that can convince them to sprout within a reasonable amount of time\, with consideration of accomplishing this at our homes in our wintery climate.” \nRob Staniland is a retired Environmental Biologist\, who has been rabidly gardening since 1980. Starting with trees\, shrubs and native perennials\, he became my a founding member of the Calgary Rock and Alpine Gardening Society (CRAGS) in the early ’90s and has focused on those sorts of plants since. DESCRIPTION:       Friends of Fish Creek wishes to extend an invitation to anyone in the community garden group to come down to the Bow Valley Ranch Visitor Centre on Tuesday\, December 3rd for our open house Giving Tuesday event between 11:00 am- 6:00 pm (drop in).\n     We are giving away lots of native seed for people who would like to ‘Grow with Us’ by raising plants and giving us back some seeds when they produce their own next season. We collected over 75 native species this season\, including lots of beautiful forbs like blanket flower\, showy locoweed\, buffalo bean and others. DESCRIPTION:There are many different diseases and pests that can affect vegetable and fruit crops in the garden.  This presentation will look at some of the more commonly occurring pests\, across common host crops. We’ll look at how to recognize the pests\, what conditions favor their development and how to manage them in a garden setting. \nRob Spencer has a Bachelor of Science  in Agriculture with a major in Horticulture and a Masters of Science (Plant Sciences)\, both from the University of Saskatchewan. He worked as a Commercial Horticulture Specialist for Alberta Agriculture for 17 years.  Rob started Spencer Horticultural Solutions in March 2020. He is a Horticulture Instructor at Olds College\, specializing in horticulture crop production. DESCRIPTION:Lorne Kaban from the Alberta Regional Lily Society talks about how be became interested in Lilies and what he has learned about them. \nLocation: This will be a hybrid talk on zoom and at the Lakeview Community Association Hall 6110 – 34th Street SW. Parking is free. \nFree for members  — Non-members register at EventBrite: https:www.eventbrite.ca/organizations/events \nSpeaker: \nLorne\, has been a lifelong gardener that started out under the tutelage of his Baba and Mother in a vegetable garden on the family farm. Through out his life he has always had a few lilies in his garden. \nAbout 15 years ago\, while living in NE Alberta he heard about a farmer north of Vermilion that grew and sold lilies. When he visited Fred Fellner’s farm\, Lorne was absolutely infected with “lilyitis”. The four acre plot of seedling lilies that ranged in height from 2-7’ and covered the full spectrum of colours in the white\, yellow\, pink\, red\, and multicoloured range\, as well as were spotted\, no spots\, frosted\, and striped\, totally enamoured him. He never looked back and has been on a journey of learning\, growing\, a little hybridizing\, and promoting lilies ever since. \nHe became involved with the Alberta Regional Lily Society\, shortly after he met Fred\, and then joined the North American Lily Society a couple years later. Through both groups he has met and been mentored by folks\, many of who are now lifelong friends\, from across the globe. Lorne is the current President of both Societies and is a champion of growing lilies. He grows over 200 hundred varieties of lilies in his home garden in St Albert and is excited to share some of his knowledge with you and maybe even a couple of tips on how to manage the dread red Lily beetle!

This presentation will look at some of the more commonly occurring pests\, across common host crops. We’ll look at how to recognize the pests\, what conditions favor their development and how to manage them in a\ngarden setting. Rob Spencer has a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in Horticulture and a Masters of Science (Plant Sciences)\, both from the University of Saskatchewan. He worked as a Commercial Horticulture Specialist for Alberta Agriculture for 17 years. Rob started Spencer Horticultural Solutions in March 2020. He is a Horticulture Instructor at Olds College\, specializing in horticulture crop production.
