SUMMARY:MGAA: “How to Winter Sow” by Melissa Penney\, Habitat YEG
DESCRIPTION:Hope you can join us for a learning-packed evening about \nWinter Sowing! \nIf you are looking to grow tons of plants for very little money and not have to give up part of your home for growing seedlings each year\, then this presentation is for you!  Invented by Trudi Davidoff in 2000\, this is the method of using plastic containers  to grow seeds outdoors planted\nbetween January-March.  Melissa has been winter sowing perennials and annuals successfully for five years and is excited to show you all the tips and tricks for your own winter  sowing success. \nAfter spending years walking\, hiking and driving to photograph birds\, Melissa tried something new in 2019. She decided to instead make the birds come to her! In the last five years she has had 106 species of birds visit her urban Edmonton backyard\, and has 84 species visit in\n2024 alone! Melissa’s interests have expanded to gardening\, native plants\, insects and how it all works together. Besides her yard being a Canadian Wildlife Federation certified wildlife friendly habitat\, she loves having a space for her amazing family to play\, relax and visit with friends.  When she isn’t working on her own habitat she is a freelance photographer\, a mom to three amazing and busy kids\, and wife to a fantastic guy who understands her need to live outside more than inside. \n  \nFree for Members just use your promo code. \nTicket available on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/winter-sowing-all-you-need-to-know-and-more-tickets-1200508486199?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:MGAA: Starting Reluctant Seed of Wild Plants
DESCRIPTION:“Many plant species have evolved ways to help their seed germinate at the better times and places in their natural environments\, and can seem quite reluctant to behave for us. SUMMARY:MGAA: Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join Myrna Pearman\, Gerard Fournier and Robert Pavlis for the MGAA’s Symposium: Ground in Science.\n  \nCreating and Caring for Wildlife Habitat at Home with Myrna Pearman\n \nJoin Myrna Pearman\, lead author of  NatureScape Alberta: Creating and Caring for Wildlife Habitat at Home as she outlines current conservation concerns related to biodiversity  and offers suggestions about what we can do as gardeners to provide habitat in our own yards and gardens. Myrna oversaw the development of the gardens at Ellis Bird Farm into demonstration “Naturescapes” and led research\, conservation and education efforts to raise awareness about the importance of backyard biodiversity.  \nMyrna Pearman is a retired biologist as well as a best-selling author\, enthusiastic nature photographer and writer\, kayaker and backroads rambler. She is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS)\, the Resident Naturalist for Mother Nature’s Seed\, and is actively involved with the Red Deer River Naturalists. She lives on the south shore of Sylvan Lake\, AB. www.myrnapearman.com \nPlanting With Natives with Gerald Fournier\n \nPlanting native trees and shrubs makes a lot of sense in our challenging climate.  Join Gerard as he discusses some of the traditional uses and stories behind these important and beautiful plants\, the biology behind how they have adapted to our growing conditions and best planting practices to ensure success. \nGerard has been in love with trees most of his life\, and started his first tree service company at the age of seventeen. Since then\, after two other tree outfits and eight years work with a major tree service company in Calgary\, Gerard founded his own tree service and tree nursery in Didsbury\, Alberta\, back in 2000. Serving the industry on various boards and professional organizations most of his career\, Gerard has also been a Community Adviser for Tree Canada in Southern Alberta since 2007. Board Certified Master Arborist\, Red Sealed Journeyman Landscape Horticulturist and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified\, Gerard spends most of his time in the winters as a part time sessional instructor teaching apprentices at Olds College. Specializing in tree retention consultations and afforestation projects\, Gerard is happy to be sharing his knowledge abundantly with all those who love and work with trees! \n Climate Change from a Gardeners Perspective with Robert Pavlis\n\nThis program starts by asking a key question\, is climate change real\, and the answer will surprise you. How does global warming affect gardening and how should we change the way we do things in the garden? What can gardeners do to reduce their effect on CO2 levels? We’ll discuss invasives\, tilling\, composting\, and water use in terms of their impact on the environment. Carbon sequestration in soil is key and this has led to several soil management myths which need to be debunked. \nRobert Pavlis is a well-known speaker\, educator and myth buster with over 40 years of gardening experience. He is an award winning author of several books\, Food Science for Gardeners\, Building Natural Ponds\, Soil Science for Gardeners\, Plant Science for Gardeners\, Compost Science for Gardeners\, Microbe Science for Gardeners and Garden Myths and publishes the popular gardening blog; GardenMyths.com and a YouTube Channel; Garden Fundamentals. As the owner and head gardener of Aspen Grove Gardens\, a six-acre botanical garden\, he grows 3\,000 varieties of plants. \nRobert Pavlis\nPublished books: Garden Myths\, Food Science for Gardeners\, Plant Science for Gardeners\, Soil Science for Gardeners\nMicrobe Science for Gardeners\, Compost Science for Gardeners and Building Natural Ponds\nBlog: Garden Myths\nYouTube Channel: Garden Fundamentals\nFacebook Groups: Garden Fundamentals and Building Natural Ponds \n  \n  \nTickets: Members $35.00 — MGAA Students $25.00 — General Admission $45.00\nTalks will be recorded and available to ticket holders for 7 days after the symposium. \nClick here for Eventbrite and more ticket information.  https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/mgaa-symposium-tickets-1231033096129?aff=oddtdtcreator

A number of newer columnar trees including columnar flowering crabapples\, columnar Parkland Pillar birch and other trees are coming to the forefront. \nJohn Acorn\, Naturalist: Butterflies in the Garden and Beyond\nThere are more than 170 species of butterflies in Alberta\, and many of these are familiar garden insects.  Gardening for butterflies involves the use of both nectar-source flowers to attract the adults\, and caterpillar food plants to sustain the larvae.  Naturally\, most types of pesticides should be avoided.  Monarchs are of course the most popular of the Alberta species\, but in truth they are almost entirely limited to the southern centres such as Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.  And if the garden butterflies are an inspiration to you\, you might also enjoy pursuing butterflies farther afield\, in environments that are difficult to replicate in a managed garden. \nTony Spencer: Wildscaping\nIn the post-wild countryside of Mono\, Ontario\, Tony Spencer is conducting a series of open experiments to combine naturalistic planting design with Blue-Green Infrastructure into a fluid ecological art form. \nWorking on the local level \,he cultivates his universal concept of Wildscaping. This is about using plant-driven landscape design to create and sustain dynamic garden spaces\, filled with beauty and wildlife\, to rekindle our relationship to the natural world. \nThe focus of this talk is how to link home to landscape in a symbiotic loop to build new nature and adapt to the inevitable extremes of the new climate. \n  \nGeneral Public $45. —  MGAA Members $35.  —  MGAA Students $25.\nFor Tickets: eTransfer to: treasurer@mgaab.org\nPlease include your email address to receive the zoom link.  Thank you \nThis is a zoom presentation.\n\nMore Information on our Speakers:\nTony Spencer \nTony Spencer is the Canadian writer\, photographer\, and planting designer behind The New Perennialist.
